What once filled up our days and kept us active has been placed on hold for the time being and the importance of what we need to do right now outweighs our desire to what our interests once were. Unfortunately, negative effects from isolation can have an unwarranted impact on our mental health and our bodies.
Now more than ever it is imperative to stay active. Fitness at home can bring positive effects not only for your body, but also for your mind.
So how do we stay active when we need to practice social distancing? That's where home workouts come in.
Keeping a healthy mind
When you exercise your brain releases chemicals such as endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins are a neurotransmitter that can alleviate depression, improve mood, boost self-esteem, reduce stress and anxiety.
Serotonin regulates sleep, mood, memory, digestion and appetite plus much more. Keeping active keeps the mind active so you can rest better and feel better
Improving the body's overall wellbeing
Exercising reduces the risk of diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Improves blood circulation and reduces blood pressure. Increases energy levels, improves strength, improves sleep and relaxation.
There are huge benefits to staying active and home workouts are a great way to achieve this from the comfort of your own home. With the added benefit of not having to worry about anyone else getting in the way, you can wear what you want, listen to your favourite music as loud as you want (or until your neighbour complains), also you don't need to travel anywhere saving time and money that you can spend on something else.
How to start?
There are so many great ways to start exercising indoors, with challenging workouts only using your bodies weight or incorporating items that you find around your house to increase the resistance of your workout.
Some examples of items you can use from round your house are:
- Water bottles (can be used as dumbbells or kettlebells)
- School bag with heavy books or grocery's (used as weighted vest)
- Couch / chair (bench dips, close grips presses, Glute exercises)
- Stairs (step-ups)
- Towels (hamstring slides, lat slides)
