Merino wool therapeutic for sensitive skin
Some still think that wool is itchy but a new era of super fine merino wool is here that is not only super soft but actually also great for sensitive skin and in particular for eczema sufferers. Research conducted by Woolmark in collaboration with the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (MCRI) in Melbourne has proven that wearing super-fine merino wool closest to your skin is therapeutic for eczema suffers. So what’s the story behind merino wool and our skin?
MERINO WOOL AND OUR SKIN
Research has shown that merino wool helps both adult and young eczema sufferers. Eczema, atopic dermatitis, is an allergic condition that result in the skin becoming dry which can lead to bacterial infections, cracking, itching and redness.
It’s more common that we might realize, actually impacting 30% of children and many adults.
So what role does merino wool play in alleviating the impact of eczema?
THE HEALING BENEFITS OF MERINO WOOL
Merino wool is truly nature’s thermostat and one of the best materials to feel better, sleep better and to improve on eczema conditions. So how does it work? Merino wool works as second skin helping to create a better micro-climate closest to our skin
- Temperature regulation: the natural crimp of merino wool helps to keep us warm if it’s cold and the extraordinary breathability helps to release any excess heat
- Moisture regulation: merino wool can absorb and release 2x more moisture vapour as cotton and 30x more than synthetic materials such as polyester.
- Anti-bacterial: merino wool is naturally anti-bacterial helping to reduce skin irritation
Two studies with adults as well as toddlers have shown that wearing super-fine merino wool closest to your skin helps to reduce the eczema symptoms.
Australian study at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute. The graph shows the reduction in eczema symptoms when wearing wool and the increase in symptoms when resuming cotton clothing.
IS WOOL AN ALLERGEN?
Some people think that wool is an allergen that is however not the case. With a coarser wool there can be a sensation fo prickling on the skin but that is due to the large diameter of the fibre and is not relating to the wool itself. With super-fine merino wool this can be totally avoided.
