BETTER SLEEP, BETTER HEALTH — WORLD SLEEP MONTH 2021

The focus for this year’s world sleep month is how regular sleep leads to a better health. It’s not about just sleeping well sometimes, having a good night’ sleep most nights of the week is crucial for our health.

Still 49% of people say that they don’t get enough sleep and 80% want to sleep better.

If we sleep less than 7 hours a night we are 3x more likely to contract the common cold  and sleeping 5 hours or less make us 70% more likely to fall ill with pneumonia. Sleeping well is incredibly important to keep our immune system strong which is more important than ever these days.

So how can we sleep better?

THE EXPERT’S ADVICE FOR A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEP

Dagsmejan works with a team of sleep experts and top athletes across the world, they are sharing their top tips for improving your sleep.

 1. UNDERSTAND OUR OWN CIRCADIAN RHYTHM

Dr. med Lutz Graumann, a specialist in sports medicine, nutrition and chirotheraphy and member of the Dagsmejan medical board talks about the importance of not only getting enough sleep but also understanding our own rhythm.  We need at least 6 hours of good quality sleep to even function normally, to be on top of our game we need even more.

“However, it’s not getting up early that matters but rather understanding our own circadian rhythm and using it to be at our creative best.”

 2. FINDING YOUR SLEEP ROUTINE

Team Great Britain athlete and world champion in duathlon Emma Pallant understands the importance of a good night's sleep in not only winning today but staying on top of your game for the long haul.

"Sleep routine is super key for me. I have never been a good sleeper, always hyperactive and wanting to move around, its great for an athlete in someways but then when you find it hard to relax and sleep it’s detrimental to performance because I know first hand how much it can hinder recovery."

Emma has learned to work around her high energy to still get the amount of sleep she needs to perform:

"So I am someone who really needs to pay attention to the small details on how to facilitate sleep because its something that doesn’t come naturally to me.  So as an advocate of good sleep I go to quite a few lengths to try and improve the hours and quality that i get in my general tips are caffeine timing, breathing before bed, tracking device, company, routine, early nights and now equipment too with the nightwear that i am sleeping in, Dagsmejan."

 3. MAKING SLEEP A PRIORITY

German soccer player Sebastian Rode - under contract with Eintracht Frankfurt - knows how crucial a healthy sleep routine is not only for his body, but also for his performance on the field.

Today most people acknowledge that a good sleep is essential when it comes to physical and mental health, however it is not always easy to rest as much as we would like (and need) to. Athletes like Sebastian Rode make no exceptions and recognize how challenging it is to get a good night’s sleep, especially during busy periods:

"As a competitive athlete, good sleep is extremely important for regeneration. A bad night can sometimes be compensated physically, but too little sleep over several nights has a strong negative effect on performance."

4. A COOL BEDROOM

Becoming too hot during the night can impact our sleep negatively, Dr. Rebecca Robbins ( sleep researcher, co-author of Sleep for Success!, and member of the Dagsmejan Scientific Advisory Board) explains why a cool bedroom is essential for a good night’s sleep.

”A warm room being good for sleep is actually a myth, although believed by many. A cool temperature is absolutely essential for sleep, as a low core body temperature is associated with shorter sleep onset, but also, a warmer environment causes more sleep fragmentation and nightmares. Therefore it is recommended to keep the bedroom around 65F/18C, use a fan if you do tend to overheat, and ensure your sleepwear is light and breathable.”

 5. WEARING THE RIGHT SLEEPWEAR

To sleep well we need to understand every part of our sleep eco system. Professor Torbjörn Åkersted (Director of Stress Research Institute, Division Manager for Biological Psychology and Treatment research, Stockholm University) talks about the importance our sleepwear plays in getting a great night's sleep:

"Sleep is vital. By understanding the factors that affect our sleep and by changing a few habits we can have a big impact on our sleep quality and wellbeing. Sleepwear and bedding that help to manage temperature and sweat during the night can support the body's natural thermo-regulation."

Dagsmejan’s sleepwear can support the nightly changes in body temperature and thereby naturally improve sleep."
