Why your heater might be bad for your winter sleep

Do you sleep with the heat on? If you answered yes, you could be damaging your quality of sleep.

With colder temperatures outside it can be tempting to keep the central heating on during the night - but new research has found it can lead to a restless night's sleep as our bodies can overheat much more quickly. As well as affecting your sleep quality, it can also cause our skin to appear dry, red and itchy the following morning.

WHY HOT ROOMS DISTURB OUR SLEEP QUALITY

To be able to fall asleep our core body temperature needs to drop. If the room is too hot we will struggle to fall asleep and our bodies have to work even harder to regulate our body temperature during the night. As a result wakefulness increase and sleeping time decrease, in particular our deep sleep phases are disturbed. These slow wave sleep phases are vital for a restorative sleep and the difference between waking up tired or energized the next morning.

Studies show that people suffering from insomnia have elevated body temperatures when going to bed which makes it more difficult for them to fall asleep. As their bodies need more time to release the excess heat, they stay awake longer.

If the room temperature is too high we can also overheat during the night causing us to start to sweat. Being hot and cold at night is really detrimental to our sleep quality, by keeping the best temperature for sleep we can sleep deeper and longer.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO IMPROVE OUR WINTER SLEEP?

We should keep our bedrooms cool, ideally below below 18°c / 64.5°F. It’s fine to heat up the rest of our home but the bedroom should remain a cool zone. To avoid getting cold use a warmer duvet and a thermal pajamas to ensure that you stay warm without overheating.

To fall asleep faster we can also take a warm shower or warm bath before going to bed, this causes our body temperature to rise and then fall rapidly making you sleepy.

If our hands or feet are cold we can fall asleep faster by warming them up before going to bed. Cold hands/ feet prevent our core temperature from dropping and as a result we struggle to fall asleep.
