SLEEP AND HEALTH—FROM A PHARMASIST’S PERSPECTIVE

THE RISE OF SLEEP DISORDERS AND WHAT WE CAN DO TO COMBAT IT WITHOUT TURNING TO SLEEPING PILLS

Not only have the number of people sleeping poorly increased the past 20 years but we also consume sleeping pills at a rate never seen before. The global sleeping aids market accounted for $62 billion and is expected to continue growing.

We talked with Madame Daniela Ghillani, pharmacist and owner of Pharmacie du Palace in Montreux, Switzerland to find out what she thinks is behind this trend.

IS OUR SLEEP IN DANGER?

Why is that our sleep quality is deteriorating? Daniela emphasized that sleep is the most important instrument for our personal health and wellbeing.

“However, according to a study carried out by BFS, one quarter of the Swiss population suffers from sleep disorders and 8 out of 100 people take medication for sleep on a regular basis.”

She continues; “Sleep disorders can certainly stem from physical or mental problems which require a medical treatment. However, in many cases sleep problems are caused by the demands of our modern, always-on lifestyle. Another important but often overlooked factor is that we disturb our body’s natural thermo-regulation process”

WHY IS THERMOREGULATION SO IMPORTANT FOR OUR SLEEP?

From a medical angle thermoregulation really impacts our sleep quality and not having the best temperature for sleep or night sweats can create real problems. Daniela explains; “Our body temperature is the most important instrument of our body to regulate our sleep/wake-cycle, known as the circadian clock. “

“To enjoy a good quality sleep our inner thermoregulation system needs to decrease our core body temperature. Our body starts to naturally cool down at around 8 pm and our body temperature continues to decrease until it reaches its lowest point around 4 am when it starts to rise again in preparation for waking. “

“Unlike during our wake time, our temperature is evenly distributed across our entire body. Disturbing our body’s natural thermoregulation can have a very negative impact on our sleep quality.”

HOW TO BEST SUPPORT OUR NATURAL BODY TEMPERATURE RHYTHM?

So what can we do to support our body’s thermo-regulation? Daniela says “cooling down the temperature of our bedroom to 15-18° is a very important measure – however this is often difficult to achieve in an urban environment and due to better home insulation, room temperatures are now 5° higher on average than 50 year ago.“

So to beat the sleepless nights and the night sweats we need the right bedding system to support our natural body temperature regulation, never too warm, never too cold. This is why Daniela decided to add Dagsmejan to the health offering at her pharmacy;

“While there are good bed and mattress solutions on the market, the Dagsmejan sleepwear brings thermal control where it matters most – directly on the skin. That’s why we have decided to partner with Dagsmejan, to bring better sleep quality to our customers in a truly natural way.”
